Tanking, falls and level-access shower floors

Wet Room Tiling in Croydon, Waterproofed From the Floor Up

A wet room only works if what is under the tiles is right. The floor has to be waterproofed, formed to a fall and built to suit the room before a single tile goes down.

Wet room tiling in Croydon covers more than a tray-free shower area. The whole floor takes on the job that a shower tray and screen normally do, so the waterproofing, fall and tile layout have to work together from the start. Fitting them, including the tanking underneath, is regular work for us.

Not every bathroom can take a wet room in the way a customer pictures it. The drain position and the depth available in the floor decide what is realistic, and we would tell you that before you choose a tile rather than after.

Wet room or shower enclosure: what actually changes

A shower enclosure keeps water inside a tray, screen or set of walls. The tanking and fall only need to cover that contained area, and the rest of the bathroom floor can be built and finished differently.

A wet room removes that containment. Tiles run level across the whole floor with no raised threshold, so the entire floor has to manage water, not just the shower zone. That single change is what drives most of the extra work behind a wet room compared with a tiled shower enclosure.

Tanking and waterproofing: the part nobody sees again

Tanking is a waterproof membrane system applied to the floor and up the lower section of the walls before any tile is fixed. It forms a continuous barrier so water reaching the surface cannot travel down into the floor structure, along a joist or through to a room below.

In a wet room, that barrier has to cover the whole floor and turn up every wall it meets, not just the area behind a shower valve. Corners, the junction between floor and wall, and any pipework coming through the floor all need to be detailed as part of the same system, because a gap in any one of them defeats the rest.

The floor also needs a fall built into it so water actually runs to the drain instead of sitting on the surface. That fall is formed before the tanking goes on, and the membrane follows the same gradient, so the floor construction, the waterproofing and the drain all have to be planned as one job rather than three separate steps.

This is also the part of a wet room that cannot be put right later without real disruption. Once the floor is tiled, the tanking is hidden under the finish. A leak or a failed detail usually only shows up as damp or staining somewhere else in the room or the ceiling below, and correcting it means taking up the tiled floor to get back to the membrane. There is no shortcut once the tiles are down, which is why this stage gets the most attention before it is covered.

What the drain position and floor build-up decide

Whether a wet room is possible in an existing bathroom depends on two things above all: where the drain can go, and how much depth is available in the floor to form the fall, the waterproofing and the tile bed together.

A drain that sits close to where it needs to be, over a floor with enough build-up to work with, keeps the job straightforward. A drain that has to move, or a floor with very little spare depth, changes what is realistic and may limit the size of the level-access area or rule a full wet room out in that room.

We assess this on site rather than guessing from a floor plan. We need to see the existing floor construction, the depth available and the drain run before agreeing to a wet room, not once the tiling is under way.

Wet room tiling cost in Croydon

Cost is shaped by how much tanking is needed, how much the floor has to be reworked to form the fall, the tile format and how many cuts sit around the drain, and whether the existing bathroom floor has to come out first. A wet room quote needs the full scope of the floor build-up, not just the visible tiled area.

What to expect

Questions people ask before booking

Every project is different. These answers set expectations before the room and tiles are assessed.

Can a wet room go into an upstairs bathroom?

It depends on the floor structure and the depth available, not just on wanting a level floor. An upstairs floor has less room to form a fall and fit a full tanking and tile build-up than a ground-floor slab, and the joists and any existing pipe runs limit what can be changed. We check all of that on site before agreeing to an upstairs wet room.

Is a wet room just a shower without a tray?

Not quite. Removing the tray means the whole floor now does the job the tray and screen used to do, so the tanking, the fall to the drain and the floor build-up all have to be planned for the full room, not just a shower-sized area.

Can the drain be moved to suit the wet room layout?

Sometimes, depending on the existing pipe run and the floor construction. Moving a drain changes the fall, the floor depth needed and the work involved, so we raise it during the first assessment rather than letting either of us assume it.

Do you tile a wet room or handle the waterproofing too?

Both are part of the same job. The tanking and fall are formed as preparation for the tile finish, so they are planned and agreed together rather than treated as a separate trade.
